Owen L. (Sonny) Meighan
Treasurer of the Belize Tennis Association
Sonny was born February 7, 1944. He was introduced to the great sport of tennis in 1967 by his mother. Grace Fuller Meighan was a great tennis player in her own right and helped to foster Sonny’s love for the sport from a young age. Sonny has continued to be an active participant in the Belize tennis world for years. He has been a player, a partner, a coach, a referee, and a mentor. He has also served in various Executive positions on the Belize Tennis Association for many years and is currently the Treasurer.
Sonny has led Belize’s Tennis Teams as coach to the Pan American Games, Central American Games, and Caribbean and Central American Games. He has also been a national champion in all three types of tennis tournaments, including singles, doubles, and mixed doubles, several times. Sonny has also had an avid sports career outside of tennis. He was among the first athletes to represent Belize, known formally at the time as British Honduras, at the Olympic Games held in Mexico City in 1968. He represented the country as a Long Jumper. Following his experience as an Olympian, he took on the role of Chief of Missions for Belize at the fourth Olympic Games.
These experiences have further developed his leadership skills and his love for mentoring young Belizean athletes. Owen is a Senior Justice of the Peace and has been honoured as a Belizean patriot for his contribution to sports in Belize. He is also a member of the Belizean Hall of Fame for basketball, softball, and baseball. Sonny has always loved sports and it has always been equally rewarding to him both personally and professionally. He currently holds the position of Vice President of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association and is the President of the Belize National Fencing Federation.
